My God!â â Few countries in the world have a scientifichistory as far-reaching and extensive as France. While the French are well known for some of their inventions, like the hot air balloon and their world-famous crĂȘpes, there are a whole host of others that you may have never heard of before!
All those bikelovers in the Netherlands have the French to thank for bike rides!
Itâs often thought that the first two-wheeled vehicle was built by Scotsman KirkpatrickMacMillan in 1839, but historians arenât really sure about that. â What they do know though is that PierreMichaux and PierreLallement further developed the design for the bicycle in 1864 by adding a mechanical crank drive with pedals to a vehicle with an oversized front wheel, called âthe velocipedeâ. This then kicked off a wave of inventions on either side of the Channel, through which the modern bike took shape, with the Michauxmodel acting as a blueprint for emerging British manufacturers.
Well, the French didnât exactly invent it, but the FIFA World Cup came from a French man's wish for a worldwide competitive championship.
The FIFA president, whoâs of French descent, is JulesRimet. He might not have invented the World Cup, but it was his desire for a global competition that led to the conception of the first-ever FIFA World Cup.
Sadly enough, France didnât win the first-ever tournament, Uruguay did! However, Jules still remains the organizationâs longest-serving president.

Alexandre Godefroy was a French hair stylist back in 1888 who came up with a unique way of drying his customersâ hair. His creation was a large, helmet-like headset that was attached to the chimney pipe of a gas stove in his salon. People would sit right under it and wait patiently while their hair dried.
Although not the modern-day device you use at home, the handheld blow dryer was then patented 21 years later by the Armenian-American inventor Gabriel Kazanjian. However, versions of Godefroyâs model persisted well into the 20th century and nearly 130 years later, itâs still being used!
It wasnât just the bikini either, the bra was also invented by HerminieCadolle. At the turn of the 19th century, she thought that corsets were a sign of oppression, and wanted to give women like her a way to express their bodies.
So, she took it upon herself to design her own piece, said to help support the female anatomy without being as restrictive. So, the bra was made by feminists in a way, born from the desire to wear less restrictive and tight-fitting clothing.
Believe it or not, this is a pretty shortlist for how many more French inventions are out there - maybe weâll make a part 2 sometime soonâŠstay tuned!
